Why We Chose EcoPure® (Even Though Our Mats Are Recyclable)
Because let's face it, no one’s recycling a pee-soaked urinal mat.
At P-Wave®, we’re passionate about sustainability—but we’re also realists.
Our Slant6 and Trough urinal mats are made from recyclable EVA plastic. That’s a good start. But here’s the inconvenient truth: after a month in a busy public loo, no one wants to recycle a urinal mat. The intention is there, but the reality? Unless incinerated, most of them end up in landfill. It’s not glamorous—but it is the reason we had to think beyond the recycling bin.
Enter: EcoPure®.
So, what is EcoPure®?
EcoPure® is a clever organic additive that we include in our mats during manufacturing. It doesn’t change the way they perform while in use, and they’ll last as long as they need to on the shelf. But once they’re in landfill? That’s when the magic happens.
EcoPure® attracts microbes and accelerates natural biodegradation. Unlike oxo-degradable plastics (which break into harmful microplastics), EcoPure®-treated plastics fully biodegrade—safely and responsibly. No toxins, no microplastic soup—just CO₂, methane, and finally, good old-fashioned biomass (that’s nutrient-rich soil to you and me).
How do we know it works?
We’ve been independently testing our mats at Eden Research Laboratory in the U.S. since 2019 under ASTM D5511—a test designed to simulate landfill conditions.
The results?
- 2020: 25% biodegraded
- 2022: over 40%
- 2025: 85% biodegraded
- And it’s still breaking down
This isn’t just clever chemistry—it’s proof that even the dirtiest of products (literally) can be part of a cleaner future.
Why we did it
We chose to use EcoPure® not because it was the easy option, but because it was the right one. Our urinal mats already led the market in design and fragrance performance. Adding sustainability to the mix was the natural next step.
Recycling is still part of the conversation. But where the infrastructure and hygiene realities fail, we’ve built in a failsafe. So, whether the mats make it to a recycling bin or head for landfill, we know they won’t still be sitting there 450 years from now.
